Grant funders are as human as anyone else. They enjoy feeling appreciated! I have come to learn that there is the formal grant management process (always required for government grants) and there is the more informal (one that is welcomed by many private foundations). I encourage grant recipients to occasionally and unexpectedly remind the funder that their gift is being put to great use. Many times, private foundations are happy to receive success stories before the official report is due. They enjoy variety. Send media coverage of the gift, testimonials and thanks from recipients, photos of the program funding at work, and follow the funder through social media, sharing posts. These messages don’t ensure repeat funding but they go a long way to build valuable relationships.
